The CANvision Protocol monitor

is the most used CAN software tool in our house. It is used for developing, setup and monitoring of CAN networks. Because it is network capable, it is not necessary to be present at the measuring place.

See and analyze the data traffic, filter, send your own messages.

Configuration

Installation and Configuration

The installation on your Windows PC is like anytime. You need administrator rights. The tools support your CAN interfaces from Ixxat, Peak, Kvaser and Vector. Our CAN-Bus Tester 2 also can be used as the interface.

Choose your interface and install the necessary drivers. The program points you to the downloads from the manufacturers.

In General

The user interface explains mostly itself with tooltips and status text. So you have a steep learning curve and a short training period. From the window of CANvision server, you start the clients for transmitting and receiving. Prior you should set the baud rate for your interface. The data is stored in an own data format disables you to mix up something.

Beside the different baud rates, you are able to adjust the bit timing to your devices. You can switch the CAN controller passive to make your listening nonreactive. Over a network share of the CANvision server on the PC connected to the network, you can reach the bus comfy from your office. A share over the internet (VPN) is possible, save the money for flying an expert in.

The view of data windows are changeable, makes it possible to hide non-relevant data to get an undistorted view of the relevant data. The overwrite mode puts your data into some kind of table.

Filter specific messages, trigger specific messages, decode the data with the symbol editor to get clear text data from your sensors and actors.

CANvision Server

Server

The CANvision protocol monitor has a modular structure with the “Server” as the central element. Besides the control and configuration of the CAN interfaces, this server works as an operator between the client applications and the interface (CCI).

The CCI itself is a driver layer, that offers support for some of the commonly used CAN-Interfaces from different manufacturers to build up a consistent interface. For the recognized CAN interfaces client applications for transmitting and receiving can be started.

Besides the simple listing of the messages on the bus, the protocol monitor is able to sort data in a table-like view. You not only see endless scrolling columns of figures (scrolling mode) but a steady overview with changing values (overwrite mode). Measure intervals between messages of one node or see the absolute time. A counter tells you how many messages came from a node.

Additionally, you can edit specific symbol files for your machine. This will not show only numbers but real values and the meaning in a neat arrangement.

CANopen Receive

The client “CANopen Receive” reads the messages of your CANopen bus system. It interprets all received messages according to the CANopen specification. The messages are decoded and showed as SDO, PDO, NMT, Sync, Timestamp, heartbeat and emergency objects.

SDO transfer can be displayed in a buffered mode, so you can see the whole transmission in one.

The modes “scrolling” and “overwrite” can be used here as well.

The decoding of data can be done by using the universal CIA device profile for the node or perfectly by loading the manufacturer specific EDS-file.

Instead of badger yourself by decoding CAN messages, the meaning of message data is showed decoded and sorted on your screen.

An extensive filter function allows it, to find needed information and messages fast. You can search the full text or presort in source addresses, PGN’s and SPN’s. Colored markings lead your eye.

So you concentrate easily on principal tasks.

The program also decodes the messages defined in ISOBUS and NMEA 2000 standards.

Licence Model

License Model

The trial mode introduced from software version 1.28 allows you to test the software without purchasing it. You only need the starter set and at least one valid license if you want to save files or actively work on the bus for more than five minutes at a time. The license installs itself on the dongle and can be taken from one PC to another.

The starter set contains the USB dongle and a manual. The software has not been delivered on CD since 2019. Please download the latest version from this website instead.

With the purchase of a license you acquire the support for a full year, you receive the updates appearing in this period free of charge. With inexpensive support term extensions, you will stay up to date after this period. But also with the purchase of an additional license, you acquire a full year of support, which is valid for all purchased licenses. You can download the current program version as well as the previous versions from this website.

If you want to use the functions via your network, a license on the computer connected to the CAN is all you need. The computers accessing it do not need their own license.
